Celtic Folklore: Welsh and Manx (Volume 1 of 2)

by Sir John Rhys

About 9 h 54 min of reading42 chapters

Celtic Folklore: Welsh and Manx, published in 1901, is the two-volume collection of Sir John Rhŷs, the first professor of Celtic at Oxford. This first volume gathers the tales he and his correspondents collected across Wales about the Tylwyth Teg, the fair folk: lake maidens who marry mortals and leave when a condition is broken, changelings, fairy rings and dances, midwives summoned to fairy births, and hidden treasure, each recorded with the name of its teller and the district it came from. Rhŷs gives the Welsh text where he had it, with translation. The volume is a primary source for Welsh fairy tradition, assembled before the stories were smoothed over for literary use. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
