By Advice of Counsel
Six stories about Ephraim Tutt, the lanky, stovepipe-hatted New York lawyer who knows every trick in the law and uses them in the service of clients the law would otherwise crush. With his partner Samuel Tutt, no relation, and a small office staff, he takes on a shyster lawyer, a case involving a camel, a contempt of court charge and a woman society has already judged. Arthur Train, a former assistant district attorney in Manhattan, published this collection in 1921, and the plots turn on real points of procedure and evidence, explained so clearly that law professors assigned the stories. The tone is comic and warm, with Mr. Tutt's cigars and his belief that justice and the law are not always the same thing. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
