British Goblins: Welsh Folk-lore, Fairy Mythology, Legends and Traditions
British Goblins, published in 1880 by Wirt Sikes, the American consul at Cardiff, is a survey of the folklore of Wales in four parts. The first describes the fairies, the Tylwyth Teg, their five tribes, their dances, their changelings and their dealings with mortals. The second treats the spirit world: ghosts, household spirits, the corpse candles and the phantom funerals, the cwn annwn or hounds of hell, and the devil in Welsh legend. The third covers the customs of the year from New Year's Day to Christmas, courtship and marriage, and the funeral practices, including the sin-eater. The fourth collects beliefs about wells, stones, caves and bells. Sikes gathered much of it himself in Glamorgan.
