Birds of the Rockies

by Leander S. Keyser

About 4 h 31 min of reading17 chapters

Leander S. Keyser, an American naturalist and writer on birds, published Birds of the Rockies in 1902, after summers spent rambling through the mountains and plains of Colorado. Instead of a formal manual he offers a series of field excursions: across bald peaks and green valleys, over the Continental Divide, around Georgetown and up Gray's Peak, and out onto the arid plain, with sparrows, pipits, larks, hummingbirds and many other species observed along the way. Illustrated with plates by Louis Agassiz Fuertes and drawings by Bruce Horsfall, it closes with a check-list of Colorado birds, making it both a pleasant nature narrative and a historical record. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
