Audubon the Naturalist: A History of His Life and Time. Vol. 2 (of 2)
The second volume of Francis Hobart Herrick's Audubon the Naturalist, published in 1917, takes up the story in 1831, with The Birds of America half engraved in London and its author back in the United States to find more birds and more subscribers. Herrick follows the expeditions to Florida and Labrador, the quarrels with George Ord and the defenders of Alexander Wilson, the collaboration with William MacGillivray on the Ornithological Biography, the completion of the great folio, the quadrupeds, the home at Minnie's Land on the Hudson and Audubon's decline and death in 1851. Herrick prints many letters in full and settles, with documents, the disputed question of Audubon's birth in Haiti. It is the fullest biography of its subject. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
