Antony and Cleopatra

by William Shakespeare

About 1 h 46 min of reading47 chapters

Antony and Cleopatra, written around 1606 and first printed in the Folio of 1623, follows Plutarch's account of the last years of the Roman Republic. Mark Antony, one of the three rulers of the Roman world, has abandoned his duties for the court of Cleopatra in Alexandria; recalled to Rome, he patches up his alliance with Octavius Caesar by marrying his sister, then returns to Egypt and to war. The play moves across the Mediterranean in more than forty scenes, from the sea fight at Actium to the queen's monument, with the blunt soldier Enobarbus as its chorus. Its poetry of excess and its two aging, magnificent lovers make it one of Shakespeare's largest achievements. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
