About 10 h 37 min of reading248 chapters

Lady Wilde, mother of Oscar Wilde and herself a poet who wrote under the name Speranza, published Ancient Legends, Mystic Charms and Superstitions of Ireland in 1887. Much of it drew on material collected by her late husband, Sir William Wilde, from the country people of the west of Ireland. It gathers legends of the fairies and their music, dances and revenge, the stolen bride and the changeling, the evil eye, the Phouka and the banshee, together with charms and cures, beliefs about May Day and other festivals, marriage rites, wakes and the dead, and sketches of the ancient Irish past, its poets and its queens. It is a rich source of Irish folklore. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
