Among Cannibals: An Account of Four Years' Travels in Australia and of Camp Life With the Aborigines of Queensland

In 1880 the Norwegian naturalist Carl Lumholtz set out for Australia to collect animals for the University of Christiania and to study the little-known Aboriginal peoples. Among Cannibals, translated into English by Rasmus B. Anderson and published in 1889, recounts his four years there, above all the months he spent in the bush of northern Queensland traveling with Aboriginal companions. He describes hunting, camps, food, ceremonies, quarrels and beliefs, and the search for the tree kangaroo and other rare animals, along with the settlers and their harsh treatment of the native people. Some judgments reflect the prejudices of its day, but it is a detailed eyewitness record. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
