Carl Sofus Lumholtz (1851–1922) was a Norwegian explorer and ethnographer. Trained in theology, he turned to natural history and spent four years in Australia from 1880, collecting specimens for the University of Christiania and living among Aboriginal peoples in northern Queensland, experiences recounted in Among Cannibals. He then led several expeditions to the Sierra Madre of northern Mexico, studying the Tarahumara, Huichol and other peoples, described in Unknown Mexico, and later explored Borneo. His careful observations and photographs make his books valuable records of peoples and environments that were changing rapidly.
