Aladdin & Co.: A Romance of Yankee Magic
Aladdin & Co., published in 1904, is Herbert Quick's novel of a Midwestern real-estate boom. The narrator, Albert Barslow, a small-town lawyer and political organizer, is recruited at a national convention in Chicago by his old friend Jim Elkins, a promoter of irresistible confidence, to help turn the sleepy town of Lattimore into a city. With a speculator, a banker and a railroad man they form a syndicate, buy land, build a street railway and a packing plant, and watch prices climb on nothing but expectation. The Yankee magic of the subtitle is credit, and the book follows the boom to its logical end. Quick, who later wrote Vandemark's Folly, knew such Iowa towns, and the novel is both satire and love story. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
