Afghanistan
Afghanistan, published in 1906, is the British journalist Angus Hamilton's survey of the country and its borders at the height of the rivalry between Britain and Russia in Central Asia. He begins in Russian territory, describing the Orenburg-Tashkent railway, Bokhara, Samarkand and Merv, and the military railways pushed toward the Afghan frontier, then follows the northern border along the Oxus, the Murghab valley, Herat, Kandahar and Seistan. Later chapters cover the provinces and peoples, administration, laws and revenue, trade, the army and forts, Kabul with its palaces, court and bazaars, and the history of Anglo-Afghan relations. Hamilton writes as an advocate of a firm British policy. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
