Acadia, or A Month with the Blue Noses, published in 1859, is a travel book by Frederic S. Cozzens, a New York wine merchant and humorist known for The Sparrowgrass Papers. With a friend he journeys to Nova Scotia, whose people were nicknamed Blue Noses, partly in search of the country of Longfellow's Evangeline. He describes Halifax, coastal villages, inns and fellow travelers, the Annapolis valley and the descendants of the French Acadians, whose old-fashioned dress and manners he observes with sympathy. The tone is genial and lightly comic, with digressions on history, food and the peculiarities of provincial life. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
