A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians, in the Middle and Higher Classes in this Country, Contrasted with Real Christianity.
William Wilberforce, the member of Parliament who led the campaign against the British slave trade, published A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians in 1797. Addressing the comfortable middle and upper classes of his country, he argues that most of them hold only a nominal, conventional faith, and he sets against it what he calls real Christianity: a religion of the heart grounded in the corruption of human nature, redemption through Christ and a life transformed in every part. The book sold widely, influenced many readers in the evangelical revival, and explains the convictions behind Wilberforce's public career. This text follows a Dublin edition from the year of first publication. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
