A New System, or an Analysis of Antient Mythology, first published between 1774 and 1776, is Jacob Bryant's attempt to show that the myths of Greece, Egypt and the East are distorted memories of the Flood and of a single people, the Amonians, descended from Ham, who spread their sun worship and their language across the ancient world. This second volume of the six-volume third edition of 1807 analyzes the Phoenicians and the Cuthites, serpent worship, the Cyclopes, Medusa, temple rites, the mysteries of Ceres and the legendary heroes Osiris, Perseus, Hercules, Dionysus, Sesostris, Semiramis and Zoroaster. Bryant's etymologies were rejected even in his own day, but the book was widely read and influenced William Blake.
