A Love Story was published in Sydney in 1841 under the name of "A Bushman," and is one of the earliest novels to be written and printed in Australia. Its author, William Harvey Christie, explains in his preface that he wrote it in the lonely evenings of a settler's life. The story itself is set far from the colony: it follows the Delmé family of an English country house, a young officer's regiment, a marriage, madness and a long journey through Malta, Naples, Rome and the Tyrol, with digressions into ghost stories, students' tales and the author's opinions on everything he saw. The two volumes are bound together here. It is a curiosity of colonial literature as much as a romance.
