William Harvey Christie

William Harvey Christie was a settler in the colony of New South Wales and the author of A Love Story, published in two volumes in Sydney in 1841 under the name "A Bushman." In his preface he describes composing the novel in the lonely evenings of a bushman's life and dedicates it to Lady Gipps, wife of the governor. The book, a romance of an English military family set in England, Malta and Italy rather than in the colony, is among the earliest novels written and printed in Australia. Little else is known of his life; he appears to have served as an officer before emigrating.
