A Little English Gallery

About 3 h 25 min of reading17 chapters

A Little English Gallery, published in 1894, is a set of five biographical essays by the American poet Louise Imogen Guiney. Her subjects are Lady Danvers, the mother of George Herbert and the friend of John Donne; the Welsh poet Henry Vaughan; the Restoration dramatist George Farquhar; Topham Beauclerk and Bennet Langton, the two young friends of Samuel Johnson; and the essayist William Hazlitt. Guiney chose people who stood a little outside the main light of their periods, and she writes about them with learning, affection and a dry wit. The essays are short and quotable, and the book is a good introduction to a writer who deserves to be better remembered. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
