A Labrador Doctor, published in 1919, is the autobiography of Sir Wilfred Grenfell, the English physician who devoted his life to the fishermen and settlers of Newfoundland and Labrador. Grenfell recalls his boyhood on the Dee estuary, his medical training in London, where the evangelist Dwight Moody turned his faith into a vocation, and his work with the mission to deep-sea fishermen. In 1892 he sailed to Labrador and found a coast without doctors, and he tells how he built hospitals, nursing stations, schools, orphanages and cooperatives there, traveling by hospital ship in summer and by dog sled in winter.
