About 16 h 16 min of reading33 chapters

Henry Sampson's History of Advertising, published in London in 1874, was one of the first full-length histories of its subject. Sampson begins with the forms of publicity known in the ancient world and the Middle Ages, from public criers and painted signs to the posters of the street, then follows the rise of newspaper advertising from its earliest appearances in the seventeenth century through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Along the way he gathers curious specimens of every kind: eccentric notices, swindles and hoaxes, quacks and impostors, lotteries, matrimonial advertisements and handbills, with a chapter on American and colonial examples. Illustrated with facsimiles and full of anecdotes, it is a lively record of how Britain bought and sold. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
