Henry Sampson was an English journalist of the Victorian period, known especially for his sporting journalism. Writing under the name Pendragon, he founded The Referee, a popular Sunday newspaper devoted to sport and the theater, in 1877, and edited it for many years. His History of Advertising from the Earliest Times, published in 1874, was one of the first full-length histories of the subject and is still consulted for its many curious specimens and anecdotes.
