A Heart-Song of To-day is a Canadian society novel by Annie G. Savigny of Toronto, written in the 1880s. Captain Lionel Trevalyon, a handsome and much-pursued man about town, is kept from meeting the woman he actually wants, Vaura Vernon, by the scheming of a rich widow, Mrs. Tompkins, and a rival. The story moves between London drawing rooms, tableaux vivants, Paris and the Alps, and its subtitle names the real enemy: the "unruly member" is the tongue, and gossip, slander and anonymous letters do more damage here than any villain's sword. The chapter titles ("Velvet Paws Conceal Claws," "Knaves Are Trumps") give a fair idea of the tone, which is arch, fast and fond of French tags. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
