David Starr Jordan, the ichthyologist who was then president of Stanford University, published A Guide to the Study of Fishes in two volumes in 1905. This second volume is the systematic part of the work, a survey of the bony fishes group by group. It begins with the ganoids, such as sturgeons and gars, and moves through the herrings and the salmon and trout family, the grayling and smelt, eels, carp and catfishes, then the great order of spiny-rayed fishes: mackerels and pompanos, perches and basses, croakers, wrasses, the mailed-cheek fishes, gobies, flatfishes and blennies, ending with the anglers. Jordan mixes classification with notes on habits, distribution and use, and the text is heavily illustrated. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
