David Starr Jordan (1851–1931) was an American ichthyologist, educator and peace activist. Born in upstate New York and trained at Cornell, he became president of Indiana University in 1885 and in 1891 the first president of Stanford University, which he led for more than two decades. A leading authority on fishes, he described hundreds of new species and wrote A Guide to the Study of Fishes (1905) and many other works, often with collaborators. He was also a prominent campaigner against war and imperialism, although his strong support for eugenics has since damaged his reputation.
