A guide to the history of physical education

by Fred Eugene Leonard

About 9 h 18 min of reading82 chapters

Fred Eugene Leonard taught hygiene and physical education at Oberlin College for nearly thirty years and spent much of that time gathering the European literature on the subject. His Guide, published in 1923 shortly after his death, traces physical training from the Greek gymnasium and the Roman baths through medieval chivalry, the Renaissance humanists, the German Turner movement, Swedish gymnastics and the playground and college programs of the United States. It is a textbook rather than a narrative, with a bibliography after each chapter and nearly a hundred illustrations, and it remains a useful map of how people in the West have thought about training the body. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
