Fred Eugene Leonard (1866–1922) was an American physician and educator who taught hygiene and physical education at Oberlin College in Ohio for nearly three decades and lectured for many summers at Harvard. Finding when he began that no comprehensive history of his field existed in English, he spent years in the special collections of Stockholm and Berlin and published Pioneers of Modern Physical Training in 1915, followed by A Guide to the History of Physical Education, which appeared in 1923, shortly after his death, and became the standard text for a generation of American students. He was a founder of what became the national professional association for physical education.
