A Critical Exposition of the Popular 'Jihád'
Showing that all the Wars of Mohammad Were Defensive; and that Aggressive War, or Compulsory Conversion, is not Allowed in The Koran - 1885
A Critical Exposition of the Popular Jihad was published in Calcutta in 1885 by Cherágh Ali, an Indian Muslim scholar and official in the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad and a colleague of the reformer Sayyid Ahmad Khan. Against both European critics of Islam and the jurists of the Islamic legal schools, Cherágh Ali argues that every war fought by Muhammad was defensive, that the Koran permits fighting only in self-defense and forbids compulsory conversion, and that the doctrine of aggressive jihad was a later construction of the common law of the Muslim jurists, not of the Koran itself. He examines the wars with the Meccans, the Jews and the Byzantines one by one. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
