About 36 h 06 min of reading35 chapters

Richard Baxter's Christian Directory, published in 1673, is the largest work of practical theology in English, a guide to the whole of life for Puritan readers who had asked the Kidderminster minister for cases of conscience. This first of its four parts, Christian Ethics, treats the duties of the individual: it begins with directions to the unconverted and to young Christians, and goes on to the great duties of religion and to the government of the thoughts, the passions, the senses, the tongue and the body, with a long appendix of cases. Baxter's method is to anticipate every objection and difficulty, and the result is a detailed picture of how a seventeenth-century Protestant was expected to live. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
