1601: Conversation as it was by the Social Fireside in the Time of the Tudors
Mark Twain wrote 1601 in 1876 as a private joke for his friend the Reverend Joseph Twichell, and it circulated for years only in small, privately printed editions, the first of them produced at West Point. Written in mock Elizabethan English, it purports to be the diary of Queen Elizabeth's cupbearer, who records a fireside conversation between the queen, Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Sir Walter Raleigh, Francis Bacon and several ladies of the court. When someone breaks wind, the talk turns into a contest of bawdy stories and frank language. This edition surrounds the short text with an introduction on its history, notes and a bibliography. It is Twain at his most deliberately irreverent, a parody of genteel literary manners. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
