Historical Sketches of Magic and Witchcraft in England and Scotland

About 7 h 39 min of reading32 chapters

Witch, Warlock, and Magician, published in 1889, is W. H. Davenport Adams's collection of historical sketches of magic and witchcraft in England and Scotland, written, as he says, from the standpoint of a sympathetic but incredulous observer. After an introduction on the progress of alchemy in Europe, he tells the stories of Roger Bacon, both real and legendary, of Dr. John Dee and his assistant Edward Kelly, of the astrologer William Lilly and of the English Rosicrucians. The second part traces witchcraft in England, from its early history through the Lancashire witches and the witch-finder Matthew Hopkins to its decline, then the Scottish witch trials under James VI, and closes with the literature of the subject. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
