Winesburg, Ohio: A Group of Tales of Ohio Small Town Life
Winesburg, Ohio, published in 1919, is Sherwood Anderson's cycle of twenty-two tales about the people of an imaginary town, modeled on Clyde, Ohio, where he grew up. An opening sketch, The Book of the Grotesque, explains the method: each inhabitant has seized on a single truth and been twisted by it. Wing Biddlebaum's hands, Doctor Reefy's paper pills, Elizabeth Willard's thwarted life, the Reverend Curtis Hartman at his window, Alice Hindman running naked in the rain and Enoch Robinson's imaginary friends make up a portrait of loneliness and inarticulate longing, held together by the young reporter George Willard, to whom the townspeople confide and who leaves on the morning train in the last story.
