William of Malmesbury, a twelfth-century monk of Malmesbury Abbey, wrote his history of the kings of England as a successor to Bede, and dedicated it to Robert, Earl of Gloucester, son of Henry I. This English version, made by John Sharpe in 1815 and revised by J. A. Giles in 1847, runs from the arrival of the Angles and the separate kingdoms of Kent, Wessex, Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia, through Egbert, Alfred and Athelstan, to the Norman kings and the reign of Stephen. William is a lively narrator with a taste for anecdote, miracle and character sketches, and an unusually careful judge of his sources for his time.
