Six cousins orphaned by the Civil War are gathered under the roof of their grandparents, and the narrator, one of them, recalls the first year there: the work of the farm through the seasons, school, the neighbors, the animals, scrapes and punishments, and the firm and kindly rule of the Old Squire. Stephens wrote for The Youth's Companion for most of his life, and the stories were long favorites with American boys.
