Western Characters; or, Types of Border Life in the Western States
John Ludlum McConnel, an Illinois lawyer and novelist, published Western Characters in 1853 with illustrations by F. O. C. Darley. In a series of sketches he describes the types who made up life on the frontier of the Mississippi valley as he knew it: the Indian, the French voyageur, the pioneer, the ranger, the regulator, the justice of the peace, the peddler, the schoolmaster and schoolmistress, and the politician. McConnel mixes affectionate portraiture, humor and anecdote with reflections on how the West was changing and on what was being lost as settled society arrived. It is a lively source for the social history of the early Midwest. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
