Varney the vampyre; or, the feast of blood
Varney the Vampyre; or, The Feast of Blood appeared in weekly penny parts between 1845 and 1847 and runs to more than two hundred chapters, the longest vampire story in English. Its authorship is disputed between the hack writers James Malcolm Rymer and Thomas Peckett Prest. Sir Francis Varney, tall, pale and fanged, descends on the Bannerworth family and their daughter Flora in the opening chapter and is thereafter chased by mobs, shot, drowned and revived through a long sequence of adventures that carry him across England and Europe, repenting at intervals and relapsing. The book introduced many of the conventions later used by Le Fanu and Stoker, and it is read today as the model penny dreadful. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
