Unto This Last, and Other Essays on Political Economy
This volume gathers John Ruskin's main writings on economics. Unto This Last, four essays that so scandalized readers of the Cornhill Magazine in 1860 that the series was stopped, attacks the political economy of its day for treating workers as machines driven by self-interest, and argues that "there is no wealth but life." It is preceded here by The Political Economy of Art, lectures of 1857 on the discovery, application, accumulation and distribution of artistic resources, and followed by further essays on political economy. Ruskin's call for fair wages, honest work and social responsibility influenced the British labor movement and the young Gandhi.
