The Seven Lamps of Architecture
The Seven Lamps of Architecture, published by John Ruskin in 1849, sets out the principles he believed should govern building, arranged under seven headings he calls lamps: Sacrifice, Truth, Power, Beauty, Life, Memory and Obedience. He argues that good architecture offers the best of materials and work, that it never deceives about structure or material, that its forms should be drawn from nature, that it must bear the marks of the living hand of the workman, and that buildings should be preserved rather than restored. The examples are drawn mostly from the Gothic churches of Italy and France, which Ruskin had drawn himself. The book prepared the ground for The Stones of Venice.
