The Stones of Venice, Volume 2 (of 3),
The second volume of The Stones of Venice, published in 1853 and subtitled The Sea-Stories, is the heart of John Ruskin's work on the city. Its first part covers the Byzantine period, beginning with the lagoon and the islands, then Torcello and Murano, St. Mark's, which Ruskin describes with the care he gave to no other building, and the Byzantine palaces of the Grand Canal. The second part turns to the Gothic period and opens with the chapter The Nature of Gothic, his account of savageness and changefulness in medieval building and his attack on the division of labor, which William Morris later printed on its own, before treating the Gothic palaces. Appendices discuss the gondolier's cry, tides and pulpits. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
