Lectures on Architecture and Painting, Delivered at Edinburgh in November 1853
In November 1853 John Ruskin gave four public lectures in Edinburgh, published the following year as Lectures on Architecture and Painting. The first two argue for Gothic architecture as a living style for ordinary houses and streets, attacking the classical and Renaissance manners of modern building and praising ornament drawn from nature. The third lecture defends the landscape painter J. M. W. Turner and traces the development of his work, and the fourth explains and supports the young painters of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Ruskin printed the lectures almost as delivered, with addenda, so they keep the energy and polemical edge of the platform.
