Modern Painters began in 1843 as a defense of J. M. W. Turner by an anonymous Oxford graduate of twenty-four, and grew over seventeen years into John Ruskin's five-volume theory of art. This first volume lays the foundations. Ruskin distinguishes the ideas of power, imitation, truth, beauty and relation that painting can convey, then devotes the greater part of the book to truth: the truth of tone, color, space, skies and clouds, earth and mountains, water, and vegetation, comparing the landscapes of Claude, Poussin, Salvator Rosa and the Dutch masters with those of Turner and the moderns and finding the old masters wanting.
