The Elements of Drawing, in Three Letters to Beginners

About 4 h 56 min of reading28 chapters

The Elements of Drawing, published in 1857, is John Ruskin's course for amateurs who want to learn to see, written as three long letters to a beginner. The first letter sets ten exercises in pen and pencil, from shading a square evenly to copying leaves and stones, with Ruskin's insistence that patience matters more than talent. The second takes the student out of doors to sketch from nature, trees, clouds, water and buildings, and explains how to look at the work of Turner and the old masters. The third turns to color and composition, stating nine laws, of principality, repetition, continuity, curvature, radiation, contrast, interchange, consistency and harmony. An appendix recommends things to study. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
