Uncle Tom's Cabin

by Harriet Beecher Stowe

About 12 h 03 min of reading47 chapters

Uncle Tom's Cabin follows two threads out of a Kentucky plantation whose owner is forced to sell. Eliza flees north across the frozen Ohio with her small son, pursued by slave catchers; the devout, patient Tom is sold south, first to the easygoing St. Clare household in New Orleans and then to the brutal Simon Legree. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the novel in response to the Fugitive Slave Act, and when it appeared in book form in 1852 it sold in the hundreds of thousands and hardened opinion on both sides of the slavery question. Its sentiment is strong and its portraits of Black characters are now read critically, but few American novels have had so direct an effect on public life. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
