Twas the Night before Christmas: A Visit from St. Nicholas

by Clement Clarke Moore

About 5 min of reading2 chapters

A Visit from St. Nicholas, better known by its first line, "'Twas the night before Christmas," was published anonymously in a Troy, New York newspaper in 1823 and later claimed by Clement Clarke Moore, a professor of Hebrew and Greek. In fifty-six lines of galloping verse a father wakes on Christmas Eve to see a sleigh drawn by eight named reindeer land on his roof and a plump, jolly St. Nicholas come down the chimney to fill the stockings. The poem fixed much of the modern picture of Santa Claus, from the reindeer's names to the finger laid aside his nose, and it has been read aloud to children every December since.
