Travels in China, Containing Descriptions, Observations, and Comparisons, Made and Collected in the Course of a Short Residence at the Imperial Palace of Yuen-Min-Yuen, and on a Subsequent Journey through the Country from Pekin to Canton
Travels in China, published in 1804, is John Barrow's account of China as he saw it with Lord Macartney's embassy to the Qianlong Emperor in 1793 and 1794, in which he served as comptroller of the household. Barrow describes the voyage up the Yellow Sea and the Pei-ho, his stay at the imperial palace and gardens of Yuen-min-yuen near Peking, and the long overland journey south to Canton. Along the way he discusses the manners and customs of the people, the court, the emperor and his household, language, literature and the arts, science and medicine, religion, law, agriculture and population. His judgments are often severe, and the book shaped British views of China for decades. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
