The Way To Geometry

by Petrus Ramus

Translated by William BedwellAbout 5 h 11 min of reading52 chapters

The Way to Geometry is William Bedwell's English translation of the Geometria of Petrus Ramus, the French humanist who sought to reform the teaching of every art by method and definition, published in London in 1636, after Bedwell's death, with a preface by John Greaves, professor of geometry at Gresham College. In twenty-seven short books it proceeds from magnitude, lines, angles and figures through triangles, quadrangles and circles to the measurement of surfaces and the solid bodies, the cube, the regular and mixed polyhedra, the sphere, the cone and the cylinder, with worked examples and diagrams. Ramus meant it to be plainer than Euclid, and Bedwell's seventeenth-century English keeps its flavor. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
