The Part played in the Great War by the Royal Air Force

About 10 h 31 min of reading10 chapters

The War in the Air is the official history of British air power in the First World War, and this first volume, published in 1922, was written by Walter Raleigh, the Oxford professor of English literature, from the records of the Air Ministry. Raleigh begins long before 1914, with the pioneers of the airplane and the airship, the founding of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service and the men who prepared them, and then follows the squadrons across the Channel in August 1914 and through the retreat from Mons, the Marne and the Aisne to the first winter of the war. He writes for outsiders and insists that the men he names are only samples of thousands. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
