The Wandering Jew — Complete
The Wandering Jew, serialized in 1844 and 1845, is Eugène Sue's immense novel of a Jesuit plot to seize an inheritance. In 1832 seven scattered descendants of the Rennepont family, among them two orphan girls brought from Siberia by the old soldier Dagobert, an Indian prince, a factory owner, a priest and a Parisian workgirl, are due to meet in Paris to claim a fortune laid up for them a century and a half before. The sinister Rodin and his order set out to prevent them. Over all of it hover the legendary Wandering Jew and his female counterpart, bringing the cholera in their wake. Sue mixes melodrama with socialist argument, and the book was an enormous success and a scandal. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
