This first volume of the Hakluyt Society's edition of the voyages of Pedro Fernández de Quirós, translated and edited by Sir Clements Markham in 1904, contains Quirós's narrative of Álvaro de Mendaña's second expedition to the South Seas in 1595. Sailing from Peru as chief pilot, Quirós describes the discovery of the Marquesas, the attempt to found a colony on Santa Cruz, quarrels among the soldiers and settlers, the death of Mendaña, and the desperate passage to Manila under the command of his widow, Isabel Barreto. Markham's introduction, bibliography and comparative list of maps place the voyage in the long Spanish search for a southern continent.
