The Varmint
Owen Johnson's novel of 1910 follows Dink Stover, a cherubic-looking boy with a talent for trouble, from his arrival at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. Stover sets out to dominate his new world, earns a reputation as a varmint, defies the older boys and is brought down to size, then gradually wins his place through football, friendship and a growing sense of honor. Johnson, who had attended the school himself, captures the slang, pranks, rivalries and loyalties of American boarding-school life with humor and warmth. The book was followed by Stover at Yale, which takes the same hero on to college. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
