The Underground Railroad, published by William Still in 1872, is the fullest record of the secret network that helped enslaved people escape to the North, compiled by a man who worked at its center. Still, the son of former slaves, was secretary of the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee from 1852 to 1861 and kept notes on the hundreds of fugitives who passed through his office, in part so that separated families might find one another. He reproduces their stories, their letters, the newspaper notices offering rewards for them and the correspondence of the agents who sheltered them, and he adds sketches of the committee's members and of celebrated cases such as Henry Box Brown and the Crafts.
