The uncivilized races of men in all countries of the world; vol. 1 of 2
Being a comprehensive account of their manners and customs, and of their physical, social, mental, moral and religious characteristics
John George Wood, a popular Victorian writer on natural history, attempted in this large illustrated work to describe the manners and customs of peoples around the world whom he called uncivilized. The first volume deals mainly with Africa, from the Zulu and other peoples of the south through the Hottentot, Bushman, Bechuana and Damara to the peoples of the great lakes, the Nile, the Gabon, the Gold Coast, Dahomey and Abyssinia, and then turns to Australia. Wood drew on travelers' and missionaries' reports for dress, weapons, marriage, religion and daily life. Its attitudes reflect Victorian prejudice, and it is best read as a historical document of how Europeans saw other cultures. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
